Goal setting

When we first started Propella, we thought we had goal setting all figured out. We set a ton of goals at the start of the year and thought, “That’s it, we’re going to be millionaires!” Well... let’s just say, reality quickly gave us a wake-up call.

A few weeks in, we couldn’t even remember half the goals we’d set. We were busy, yes – running around like headless chickens, but looking back, most of that busyness was reactive, not proactive. Instead of taking positive steps towards our goals, we found ourselves constantly putting out fires and reacting to whatever popped up that week.

Growing a property business is exciting, but let’s be real – it can also be overwhelming. There’s always something to do, from finding new deals to managing existing properties and dealing with unexpected problems. Without clear direction, it’s easy to feel like you’re just spinning your wheels. That’s when we realised how crucial goal setting really is.

In 2025, we decided it was time to level up. We started working with Mike Stenhouse from Inside Property Investing and plugged into a network of experienced, successful property pros. And then we found Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business by Gino Wickman. It’s been a game changer. Not only has it helped us set clearer goals, but it’s also given us a practical, actionable framework that keeps us focused. Here’s how it’s helping us level up this year:

1. Clarity is Key

We’ve all had those days where we’re juggling a hundred things and wondering, “Where do I even start?” Traction introduced us to the idea of Rocks – the big, critical goals we need to hit each quarter. These are the things that will move our business forward, whether it’s closing on a new deal, renovating a property, or expanding our portfolio. By narrowing our focus to these key goals, we’re able to cut through the noise and give our energy to what truly matters.

2. Everyone is on the Same Page

Goal setting isn’t just about what we want – it’s about making sure everyone on the team is aligned. We now start each of our weekly meetings by revisiting our Rocks and reviewing the action we’ve taken. It’s such a good feeling knowing that every action we take is a step towards our one-year and long-term goals. It’s like a team sport – everyone working toward the same goal, making progress together.

3. It Helps Us Stay Consistent

We quickly realised that property growth isn’t a sprint – it’s a marathon. Success takes time and steady effort. This is where Traction really shines for us. With the system’s guidance, we’re reminded to keep working on our Rocks every day, even when things get busy or stressful. Instead of getting lost in the weeds of day-to-day tasks, we stay focused on the bigger picture. And consistency? Well, that’s what turns small actions into big results.

4. Measuring What Matters

It’s easy to get caught up in busy work – like how many properties we’ve viewed or how many emails we’ve sent. But Traction taught us to track the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that really matter for our business growth. Now, we’re not just keeping busy; we’re making measurable progress toward our goals. We can clearly see how our actions are contributing to long-term success.

It’s not about working harder; it’s about working smarter. So, if you’re ready to level up your property business, or just get started drop us an email admin@propellaproperty.com and we would be more than happy to share our goal setting methods with you.
